| The Alliance of Coalitions for Healthy Communities presents to you the July 2008 Newsletter. We continue to support our community and community members, with our effort to prevent and educate on high risk behaviors.

What's Happening Now
Alcohol Prevention Training in Your Community
The Alliance of Coalitions for Healthy Communities is inviting community members to participate in a valuable workshop, focused on building and sustaining coalitions around the Oakland County community.
The renowned Penny Norton, Director of the FACE Project, has been asked to present at the training seminar. Norton is widely recognized as a trainer who excels at effective coalition building, with a focus on the prevention of underage drinking. While the work of individuals can be valuable, when brought together people can combine their talents and passion for change and work towards a common goal.
The training session will be held on Tuesday, August 12th 2008, from 8a.m.-2:30p.m. at the Oakland Executive Building Conference Center. The entrance fee is $10.00, and as the space is limited we ask for all participants to register early and no later than August 7th 2008. The registration form will following in an additional e-mail, along with information on how to submit. Thank you, and we hope to see you all there!

9:00 - 12:00 Penny Norton: Taking Action on Alcohol Issues in Your Community:
Building and Sustaining Community Coalitions
12:00 - 12:30 Lunch Break
12:30 - 2:30 Using the information provided during the morning, local community representatives will meet to discuss the ideas presented based on their community needs, and their understanding of local community risk and protective factors. Community coalitions will exchange ideas and experiences with other communities. The desired outcomes are:
1. Community representatives will discuss ideas to bring back to their local community for building and sustaining their coalition.
2. Coalitions will network and share information to foster future peer-to-peer mentoring and technical assistance.
3. Participants who are not currently participating in a community coalition will meet with ACHC representatives to discuss options for coalition building and taking action on alcohol issues.

Push to ban the alcoholic energy drink: Sparks
The combination of energy and alcohol is a known dangerous combination, and the Miller SAB drink Sparks is no acceptation. The potential harm to individuals who drink these types of beverages and their appeal to youths, who are the leading consumers of energy drinks, have motivated people to advocate for a ban on such products. In a related article Anheuser-Busch, top U.S. brewer, has stopped selling their energy drinks that contain alcohol. After reviewing an investigation by a group of attorney generals from 11 different states, a representative from Anheuser-Busch states: "We have determined that competing in the prepackaged caffeinated alcohol beverage sector may detract from our reputation as the global industry leader in promoting responsibility among adults who drink and discouraging underage drinking."
