What is your position on smoke-free Michigan or smoke-free Oakland County (depending on office sought)?
In order to protect the health of non-smokers, I support prohibiting smoking in workplaces in Oakland County. Importantly, however, state law prevents counties or municipalities from banning smoking in restaurants and bars. See, for example, Michigan Restaurant Association v City of Marquette, 245 Mich App 63, 626 NW2d 418 (2001).
What is your position on the medical marijuana ballot initiative?
I do not support the medical marijuana ballot initiative.
How would you address the issue of underage drinking?
We need to change the culture of acceptance that all too often surrounds underage drinking. Doing so requires more stringent enforcement of existing laws and educating parents and guardians about the very real health and safety costs that underage drinking imposes on our young people.
What is your position on using liquor license revenue as a way to generate additional revenue for the state and local municipalities?
Liquor license revenue should be earmarked for programs that prevent and/or treat substance abuse and mental illness, which is often related to substance abuse.
What have you done to support substance abuse prevention in your community?
I have long been active with the Rochester/Auburn Hills Community Coalition. In this capacity, I have volunteered to conduct Synar compliance checks of local businesses that sell tobacco, and I have participated in several Youth Dialogue Days. |
